Terry Millson and Nadia Alireza are a mother-daughter design team that opened The Birdcage, a furniture store in Kirkland, Washington in Fall 2016.
Terry began by making a career change from Education to Interior Design while living abroad in the Middle East three decades ago. She went on to co-own a high-end furniture store in Bahrain in which she did the buying and displaying, as well as working on projects throughout the Middle East and London.
Nadia grew up around the family business, and developed a love of interiors early on. She went on to study art at NYU, and work at non-profit arts organizations in New York. Looking for a change, she moved to Seattle and decided to follow her true passion and go back to school for Interior Design.
After a lifetime of unofficially collaborating, and once again finding themselves in the same place, they decided to open the Birdcage. The store is a reflection of their aesthetic, in which they like to blend new and old, high and low, rustic and refined, to create layered and interesting spaces that truly reflect its inhabitants. They hand-pick their inventory including finding new lines that excite them, as well as one of a kind vintage and antique pieces. Due to the nature of their one of a kind pieces, the store is constantly changing which gives new ideas and inspiration to its customers.
